Your PCV Valve, or Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve, controls gas emissions expelled from your Nissan's crankcase. The PCV Valve attaches to crankcase, which carries engine oil. When fuel is burned within the engine, the engine oil within your crankcase produces gases that can be harmful to the mechanical systems inside your Nissan and the earth's atmosphere. Rather than allowing those gases to seep into the internal-combustion engine and develop gunk that will compromise the major systems of your Nissan, the PCV Valve guides the gases to a “disposal” mechanism. Next, the gases are burned in the combustion chamber. Lastly, they're released into the atmosphere as a less-damaging exhaust.
This little, but crucial part mitigates a large amount of harmful gasses from escaping, while providing better airflow in the crankcase. After a PCV Valve becomes worn, you may experience engine problems. An obstructed or shut valve may lead to high pressure in your engine, head gasket issues, leaky oil, whistling, unwanted engine moisture, or sensor issues. Now and then a PCV Valve remains open. When this happens, it can cause smoke, noisy engine idle, difficulting starting the engine, or engine oil in the PCV Valve.
Regular system and engine maintenance can keep your PCV Valve from getting stuck open or closed. Despite following a regular maintenance schedule, if your PCV Valve needs to be fixed, visit a local Nissan auto care shop for repair, unless you're experienced in automotive repairs. You don't want to take any risks with your Nissan engine!
