- Communicates between your gas pedal and the throttle
- Notifies the throttle when to accelerate or decelerate
- Replacement requires an experienced technician
The Accelerator Pedal Sensor sends electrical cues to the throttle, which determines how fast it moves based on the engagement of the accelerator pedal. If the gas pedal is pushed down and engaged, the Accelerator Pedal Sensor electronically notifies the throttle to open wider and allow larger amounts of air and fuel to enter the engine. As you put less pressure on the gas pedal, the Accelerator Pedal Sensor signals the engine throttle to close (how much it closes depends on the pedal position), which then decreases the rate of acceleration in your Nissan.
Before the existence of the Accelerator Pedal Sensor, the correspondence between the accelerator and the throttle was a mechanical system. In older cars, a strong wire ran from the gas pedal to a component that would pull and push the throttle open or closed, depending on how hard the pedal was pushed. Now, new cars have an electronic Accelerator Pedal Sensor for efficiency purposes.
Symptoms that indicate your Accelerator Pedal Sensor should be replaced include: delayed acceleration or deceleration when engaging or releasing the acceleration pedal, issues with fuel efficiency, or an engine warning light on your Nissan dashboard.
If your Nissan exhibits any of these symptoms, visit your nearby Nissan authorized service center as soon as possible and ask the pros about your Accelerator Pedal Sensor. A malfunctioning Accelerator Pedal Sensor can negatively affect your Nissan’s long-term engine health. An experienced technician will be able to install a replacement sensor and ensure your Nissan is back on the road in no time.
