- Communicates between your gas pedal and the throttle
- Notifies the throttle when to accelerate or decelerate
- Replacement requires an experienced technician
Your Nissan’s Accelerator Pedal Sensor passes electrical cues to your engine’s throttle, directing it on how fast or slow to go based on the position of the gas pedal. If the gas pedal is pushed down and engaged, the Accelerator Pedal Sensor electronically signals the throttle to open further and allow larger amounts of air and fuel to come into your engine. As you put less pressure on the accelerator, the Accelerator Pedal Sensor signals the engine throttle to close (the amount it closes will depend on the position of the pedal), which slows acceleration in your Nissan.
Before this electronic system was created, the relationship between the throttle and the accelerator pedal was entirely mechanical. In older car models, a strong wire ran from the accelerator to a component that would push or pull the throttle open and shut, depending on the position of the gas pedal. Now, vehicles are made with an electronic Accelerator Pedal Sensor for increased efficiency and reliability.
Signs that your Nissan Accelerator Pedal Sensor should be replaced can include: delayed acceleration or deceleration when depressing or releasing the acceleration pedal, diminished fuel efficiency, or a “Check Engine” light that’s illuminated on your Nissan dashboard.
If your Nissan exhibits any of those signs, contact your nearby Nissan authorized service center as soon as possible and ask the pros about a replacement Accelerator Pedal Sensor. A damaged Accelerator Pedal Sensor can impact your engine’s performance and efficiency. An experienced technician will be able to install a brand new sensor and make sure your Nissan is in tip-top shape.
