- Communicates between your gas pedal and the throttle
- Notifies the throttle when to accelerate or decelerate
- Replacement requires an experienced technician
The Accelerator Pedal Sensor transmits electrical cues to your engine’s throttle, which determines how fast it moves based on the position of the gas pedal. When the accelerator pedal is pushed down and engaged, the Accelerator Pedal Sensor electronically tells the throttle to open more, allowing more fuel and air to come into your engine. When you release the accelerator pedal, the Accelerator Pedal Sensor signals the engine throttle to close (the amount it closes will depend on the position of the pedal), thereby slowing down your Nissan.
Before this electronic system was created, the communication between the throttle and the accelerator pedal was a mechanical system. In older cars, an internal wire went from the gas pedal to a valve under the hood that would move the throttle to be more or less open, depending on the position of the gas pedal. These days, new cars have an electronic Accelerator Pedal Sensor for maximum performance.
Signs that your Nissan Accelerator Pedal Sensor needs replacing can include: inconsistent acceleration and deceleration when engaging or releasing the accelerator, diminished fuel efficiency, or an illuminated engine light on your Nissan's dash.
If you notice one or more of the above signs, visit your neighborhood Nissan service center ASAP and ask about your Accelerator Pedal Sensor. A malfunctioning Accelerator Pedal Sensor may hurt your engine’s performance and efficiency. A professional Nissan technician can install a replacement sensor and make sure your Nissan is back on the road in no time.
