- Communicates between your gas pedal and the throttle
- Notifies the throttle when to accelerate or decelerate
- Replacement requires an experienced technician
Your Nissan’s Accelerator Pedal Sensor transmits electrical signals to your engine’s throttle, directing it on how fast or slow to go based on the position of the gas pedal. When the accelerator pedal is depressed, the Accelerator Pedal Sensor then signals the throttle to open more and allow more fuel and air to enter the engine. When you release the accelerator pedal, the Accelerator Pedal Sensor notifies the engine throttle to close (the amount it closes will depend on the position of the pedal), which then decreases the rate of acceleration in your Nissan.
Before this electronic system was created, the correspondence between the accelerator and the throttle was designed as a physical mechanism. In older cars, an internal wire went from the gas pedal to a valve that would move the throttle to be more or less open, depending on how hard the pedal was pushed. These days, vehicles are made with an electronic Accelerator Pedal Sensor for maximum performance.
Symptoms that indicate your Accelerator Pedal Sensor should be replaced include: inconsistent acceleration and deceleration when engaging or releasing the gas pedal, a decline in fuel efficiency, or an engine warning light on your Nissan dashboard.
If your Nissan is showing any of those signs, stop by your local Nissan dealer or service site as soon as possible and ask about a replacement Accelerator Pedal Sensor. A damaged Accelerator Pedal Sensor can negatively affect your engine’s performance and efficiency. A qualified Nissan service technician can install a brand new sensor and get your Nissan in tip-top shape.
