- Communicates between your gas pedal and the throttle
- Notifies the throttle when to accelerate or decelerate
- Replacement requires an experienced technician
The Accelerator Pedal Sensor transmits electrical signals to the throttle, which determines how fast it moves based on how your gas pedal is engaged. When the accelerator pedal is pressed down, the Accelerator Pedal Sensor instantly notifies the throttle to open further and allow larger amounts of air and fuel to come into your engine. As you put less pressure on the accelerator, the Accelerator Pedal Sensor notifies the engine throttle to close (how much it closes depends on the pedal position), thereby slowing down your Nissan.
Before this technological advancement, the communication between the gas pedal and throttle was designed as a physical mechanism. In earlier vehicles, a wire connected the gas pedal to a valve that would pull and push the throttle open or closed, depending on the position of the gas pedal. Nowadays, vehicles are made with an electronic Accelerator Pedal Sensor for maximum performance.
The signs that your Accelerator Pedal Sensor needs replacing can vary, but commonly include: unreliable or slow acceleration when engaging or lifting the accelerator, issues with fuel efficiency, or a “Check Engine” light that’s illuminated on your Nissan's dash.
If your Nissan exhibits one or more of those signs, stop by your local Nissan service center ASAP and inquire about replacing your Accelerator Pedal Sensor. A malfunctioning Accelerator Pedal Sensor may hurt your engine’s performance and efficiency. A professional Nissan technician can help you with a replacement sensor and ensure your Nissan is in tip-top shape.
